Fired Up and Ready to Go!

Thought I would take the time to share an experience with you from the past week.

Here, at the University of Kentucky, we've (College Democrats) been registering voters. Generally speaking, even in the past years we've done well with said endeavor.  But this past week has really surprised me, not just the number of young people we've actually registered, but also the level of excitement among the students.

It seems that college students have long since liked the idea of being registered and knowing that they can vote, but they haven't turned out on election day.  Now, as well as in recent history, students are excited about registering because hey are excited about voting.  For the first time in many of their lives they see a real choice in this election, and believe that they have the capacity to influence the outcome. Even though we've registered quite a number of Republicans (it's Kentucky remember) a large number of those registering are "fired up" about Barack Obama.

I share this with you because, this is Kentucky.  Kentucky isn't in play if you look at any analyst's opinions, we aren't getting campaign ads from Obama or McCain, and yet young people are excited about this election.  I'm not saying that Obama will win in Kentucky, what I am saying is that if students at the University of Kentucky are this excited about registering and voting, just imagine what you could do in your state.
